Studio’s new app allows users to combine short video clips into shareable ‘episodes’ in real-time.

New Social App Studio Aims to Redefine Group Video Sharing

As younger consumers continue to shift towards social apps that prioritize video and more personal forms of social networking, a new app called Studio is launching today with a unique group camcorder experience. This innovative feature allows groups of friends to share videos with one another in private albums, which are accessible to everyone in the group.

These albums, or ‘studios’ as they’re referred to within the app, serve as a creative outlet for users to record and share everyday memories or vlogs. Unlike traditional group chats, Studio’s studios offer a more immersive experience, allowing users to craft mini-episodes of their lives that can be revisited and shared with friends.

The Idea Behind Studio

According to Matt Hidalgo, co-founder and CEO of Studio, the idea for this app was born from exploring other social networking concepts. Initially, the team developed a photo-based bookmarking tool called Collie, which gained traction among high schoolers who used it to create bucket lists. However, they soon realized that this format didn’t quite hit the mark.

"We noticed that users were leveraging our app for more than just bookmarks," Hidalgo explained in an interview with TechCrunch. "They were sharing personal moments and experiences with their friends. We saw an opportunity to create a space where users could share more than just static images."

A Different Approach to Social Sharing

Studio’s unique approach to social sharing is centered around the concept of ‘studios.’ Within each studio, users can record and share videos that are accessible to everyone in the group. This creates a sense of community and shared experience, allowing friends to connect and engage with one another on a deeper level.

"We’re not just building an app – we’re creating a platform for people to come together and share their lives," Hidalgo said. "We want Studio to be a place where users can feel comfortable sharing their true selves, without fear of judgment or criticism."

Investment and Growth

Studio has secured funding from top investors, including Mercury Fund, Pareto Holdings, and various angels such as Cockroach Labs CEO Spencer Kimball. With this investment, the team is currently hiring a founding designer and engineer to help scale the app.

"We’re building Studio slowly and methodically," Hidalgo said. "We want to focus on capturing our audience’s attention and creating an authentic experience that resonates with them."

Competing in the Social Media Landscape

As Studio enters the social media landscape, it faces competition from established players like TikTok and Instagram. However, Hidalgo remains optimistic about the app’s potential for success.

"There’s been a shift in demographics, and young people are looking for new types of networks," he said. "We believe that Studio can fill this gap by offering a more personal and immersive experience."

A Bright Future Ahead

With its innovative group camcorder feature and focus on community-driven sharing, Studio is poised to make waves in the social media landscape. As the app continues to grow and evolve, one thing is certain – it’s going to be exciting to see how users interact with this new platform.

Studio is a New York-based startup founded by three co-founders: Matt Hidalgo, Aditya Mohile (formerly of Facebook), and Chris Chao. The team consists of six members, including two interns, and is currently hiring for key positions to help scale the app.
